Legislation

All producers and/or importers of components and stand-alone EE products are obliged to be members of a recycling company.

EE regulations

Importers' and producers' obligations: All electric and electronic products come under the Regulation for Recycling and Treatment of Waste.

The Norwegian legislation cover all the requirements in the EU WEEE Directive, but they also go further and cover all types of electric and electronic products - including B2B products.

The legislation can be read in their entirety at Lovdata (Chapter 1 of the Regulation for Recycling and Treatment of Waste - in Norwegian). You'll find an overview of the products that fall within the regulations in the EE Register.

Here are the most important obligations under thelegislation:

Producers and importers must:
• finance collection and treatment of EE waste through membership of a recycling company approved by the Climate and Pollution Agency
• use the company's sales and information material to inform that EE waste is not to be disposed of together with other waste
• report to the EE register when selling products to other EEA countries, in cases where the recycling company does not take care of this kind of reporting
•make sure EE regulations in the receiving country are being followed during sales of EE products to private households in other EEA countries.

Retailers must:
• receive industry and private EE waste. In the case of private waste no charge must be levied
• make sure EE waste is separated, safely stored and passed on to an approved reception point or treatment plant
• use their sales and information material to make clear they accept EE waste

Retailers are obliged to take back the same type of EE products which they sell, regardless of name, brand or place of purchase. In case of industrial EE waste the retailer can demand the repurchase of a similar amount of products

Municipalities must:
• make sure there are adequate reception points for free of charge disposal of private EE waste
• accept industry EE waste. Municipalities may demand a fee for this
• make sure EE waste is separated, safely stored and passed on to an approved reception point or treatment plant
• inform about waste treatment and their own system for reception of EE waste
